“coten” - the new history database

A new world history database that allows anyone

to pull out vast amount of case studies and deep insight on history

Feature 1

Quickly learn history that would otherwise require reading many books

Many things can only realized and learned after inputting a lot of historic information. For example, Julius Caesar, Nobunaga Oda and Zhang Fei were all killed by their followers. Common elements in their management style can only be understood after reading some books unless someone writes a book about this topic. “coten” allows anyone for easy access to history which used to be available to only those who had a vast amount of historical input.

Feature 2

Helps statistical analysis of history

For example, although statistical analysis on history was challenging, coten helps you understand history through more qualitative data, such as “xx% of late bloomers had such and such experiences during their childhood” or “xx% of soldiers who had great achievements have so and so characteristics”.

Feature 3

Other services can leverage history information

As history is defined “all information that is chronologically in the past,” it is anticipated to be used in any cases. coten anticipates that the information will be useful not only in education field, but also as a reference for contents creators of travel applications/regional revitalization, novels, video games and movies as well as online news pages. And other services will also be able to leverage coten’s database.

Feature 4

Help understand history with location information

You will be able to view historical events on a map by era or period, just like looking at Google Map, where activities of historical figures and historical events (such as the French Revolution) are organized with chronological data and location information.

How to

How do we organize history?

How do we organize history

to make the information available “in a meaningful way for people today”

Here is a part of our approach.

Step1

Make a historical timeline

Convert information in books to a timeline. Create a timeline using image and pattern recognition programs. Since texts in timeline have simple sentence structure and a pattern and chronological information can be assigned to all information, natural language processing (morphological analysis and keyword classification) will be more accurate.

Step2

Morphological analysis on statements

Conduct morphological analysis on each line in the timeline to decompose a part of speech and SVOC.

Step3

Extract search words and area information

Give meaning to and tag the terms in the timeline. Classify terms by person’s name, event name, location name and keyword and use that keywords for search and analysis.

Step4

Create a coordinate system of relationship among people

As the relationship of people in the timeline is critical factors to “extract trend,” create a coordinate system of each person’s relationship for each line of the timeline to quantify the relationship.

The vertical axis is defined with 7 levels of “social status” and horizontal axis is defined with 8 levels of “social distance among people in the timeline.” This coordinate system helps clarify the characteristics of the actions in each line of the timeline. This helps quantify that Alexander the Great’s invasion of Persian Empire was the battle against Dareios who was stronger than him and Nobunaga Oda was assassinated by his own general Mitsuhide Akechi.

Step5

Abstract the timeline and re-state it

Since statement in the timeline is overly specific, “different period with the same structure/people’s actions or events” cannot be identified through other period or people without deep understanding of events in the timeline.

After These Steps

History can be searched and analyzed without restriction

History information can be re-organized through abstracting the timeline, extracting keywords and creating coordinate system indicating people’s relationships. This helps search information that have never been accessible without reading many books.
